Circus – Britney’s darker side
In her album “Circus” Britney Spears sings about two types of people those who entertain and those who but only observe, she being the entertaining kind. In spite the fact that she’s been putting up a show for quite some time now (Since she was 9) she certainly hasn’t made herself happy. With obsessive fans, deadlines, performances the superstar lifestyle isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
Seeing as she sold over 83 000 000 copies of albums since late 1999 it comes as no surprise that the new title song Circus describes Britney’s need for attention as an addiction, and as usually addictions go, they tend to bring the good times with the bad. Such highs as when she told “Glamour” magazine in January 2009, that with picking up 3 trophies in the VMA’s in 2008 showed there was a lot of attention and love towards her, and how she dwarfed the presidential election and an economic depression as the most searched yahoo terms for the year. That being the 7th time in the last 8 years, the public interest in her doesn’t seem to cool down. The lows include the court’s decision to give the control of her personal and financial affairs to her father Jamie, and loosing the custody of her two sons which she had with her former husband Kevin Federline. Either though this court mandate expires in 2008 Britney agrees that this arrangement become lifetime, in part because the Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner declared her susceptible to undue influence.
Sometimes people don’t consider fame to be a prison. So many of people wish for her fame, lifestyle, the endless shopping, for all that fame in general can bring a person. But simple thing we take for granted as going to buy groceries, walks with our friends, loved ones or simply taking them into school become simply impossible.
On one seed she is adored by millions, on the other hand she is totally trapped by their need to know every aspect of her life. She’s a Southern girl who is clearly unhappy with her place in this world. Being constantly in the center of attention of the media may feed her unquenchable desire to be acknowledged, but the life she leads is a one in fear that it may well to easy disappear. Suppressing feelings is always a sure recipe for disaster, both emotionally, physically, financially you name it.
Luckily, things are going for the better now. She started singing again, dancing and recording with the bright lights of the spotlight still shinning in her face with the release of her new album “Circus” on her birthday (27th of December). With 3.7 million people watching her MTV Music special and even more celebrated her birthday under the Big Apple tent in lower Manhattan in front of the cameras of Good Morning America. Once again she is back and attracting the ever watchful eye of her adoring public. With her album doing well, maybe we can look at Britney happy, but without the entire Circus.
